Maryland Farm Wedding from Brooke Courtney Photography + Bliss ...

I could put together an entire post gushing only about how spectacular this venue is? a beautiful race horse farm in rural Maryland with lush green pastures, picturesque views, and its own vineyard? I mean, wow. But you see, I would have barely scratched the surface of the story because this farm is home to this bride?s childhood and her family?s history?(the little girl in me just melted).?Brought to us by?Brooke Courtney Photography?and Bliss Weddings and Events, this elegant east-coast wedding is so gorgeous it will make your head spin. It?s also filled with tons of DIY details and nods to the couple?s friends and families. The result is a warm, intimate, incredibly personal event filled with the glow of one very in love boy and girl and you can see it all right here in the gallery.

From Bliss Weddings and Events? Michelle & Harry approached us to help them pull the details of their wedding day together. Despite being on a tight budget, the couple felt it important to include as many of their family and friends as possible without compromising their vision. So with some cost saving tips from us, Michelle?s creative intuition, and the help of family and friends, we all worked tirelessly to bring their vision to life.

Michelle & Harry met their freshman year at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA. It was a case of ?opposites attract? for this beautiful country girl from Maryland and handsome city boy from New Jersey. After seven years together they knew they wanted to plan a wedding which was personal and meaningful, and would be a reflection of them as a couple.?Since she was a little girl, Michelle had always dreamed of having her wedding on her family?s race horse farm. This 400 acre property with its sprawling hillsides, a working race track, and a vineyard would certainly be a breathtaking backdrop. The farm houses 3 generations of the bride?s family, including her parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

In creating her personal touches, Michelle drew inspiration from her family, her friends and her farm. One of the couple?s favorite paintings is of a horse that won the Preakness in 1983 (and the cornerstone of the family business). This very painting, which hangs above the mantle in Michelle?s grandmother?s 18th century home, is depicted on their invitations and response card, and its theme is carried out through much of the d?cor. Carol St. John, the groom?s mother is a well established designer in NYC, and, with the help of her florist friend, Patti Pearce, designed all of the wedding flowers. Michelle?s bouquet was hand tied with lace from her late Aunt?s veil and her great grandmother?s locket. The guests? tables, named after famous racehorses, were decorated with lush flowers in vintage vases and each place setting had a sprig of rosemary, a symbol of remembrance, in honor of those who could not be with them on this day. Michelle?s father, Kevin, hand crafted the ceremony seats and bar backboard from old barn wood. They decorated the bar backboard with jockey silks, plaques, awards and photos ? a tribute to the family?s history and legacy in horse racing. All of the wooden signs, directing guests to the day?s activities, were specially designed by Kevin and the bride and groom.

The local neighbors took part in their wedding by transporting guests in hay wagons from the breeding shed at the base of the farm to the beautiful ceremony spot which overlooked the property. Following the ceremony, as the newlyweds recessed back down the aisle, guests tossed oats in place of traditional rice, to celebrate their union. The couple then boarded their private ?Just Married? get away wagon pulled by the most beautiful Clydesdale horses. The celebration continued with delicious food served during cocktail hour including oysters straight from the Chincoteague Bay, local cheeses, produce, and homemade recipes. A traditional southern BBQ with pit beef, ham, turkey and all the sinful fixings were washed down with Makers Mark (a family favorite), and wine made right on the farm. Because of Michelle and Harry?s love of pie the dessert display included every kind of pie imaginable. The final touch was a 1 tier wedding cake, baked locally using Michelle?s great grandmother?s famous recipe.

Other meaningful details included silhouettes of Washington and Lee painted on the game of corn hole which paid homage to the couple?s alma mater, and a Bruce Springsteen biography book which the couple used as their guest book, paying tribute to New Jersey and their love of music. This book is displayed on the coffee table in the couple?s home and they love flipping through the pages to read love notes from guests bringing back memories of the day.?Every detail of Michelle and Harry?s wedding had a purpose and was a true labor of love.

From Jeff of Brooke Courtney Photography??When I first spoke to Michelle before she booked our team, I knew her wedding was going to be special. On the tippy top of a beautiful horse farm was where they shared their I do?s. But before then, Michelle shared a very special first look with her father. It?s become a tradition now to have a first look between not only the bride and groom but also the bride and her father. And I love it. With that first look, both Michelle and Dad were at ease and ready to enjoy the day. Without a cloud in the sky, guests were taken by carriage up from the house to the hill. There aren?t enough words to explain how beautiful it was. As the sun set we took portraits upon that hill. It was perfect. We rode the carriage back with the sun setting behind us. Music, singing and laughing, all shared by great friends. During the reception, so much love was shared by each family, and their speeches were some of the most touching I?ve ever heard. Such a relaxing, beautiful day for a relaxing, beautiful wedding. Certainly one of Sam?s and my favorites from the 2012 season.

From the Bride??Our families and friends have spent wonderful times at the farm, and in fact, it was here that Harry proposed to me! For us, the farm is home and encompasses all things important to us?not only family, friends, horses and nature, but also good food, wine, and relaxed good old fashioned Southern fun.

The inspiration for the wedding was to have it be rustic to reflect the farm setting, comfortable and relaxed for guests to reflect Harry and I?s vision for the wedding as a bigger version of the many bonfire and band parties we have had there and at Washington and Lee with all our wonderful friends and family, and also incorporate the racehorse theme that is such a big part of my family and the farm. We wanted neutral colors as to not take away from the natural beauty of the farm but also to reflect the fall season with browns and burgundy and textures like straw, burlap, and wood.

Almost every detail of this wedding was DIY ? my dad and mom worked tirelessly on the farm to prepare for the wedding. We did the flowers ourselves and the cocktail hour food as well as the desserts. It was a wonderful team effort, especially for 250+ guests.?My dad and his best friend hand made the benches that the guests sat on when we got married.?The wooden signs that my dad and I made for parking, directing guests and for ones showing the miles to some of our favorite places on earth.?

I hand made our invitations with stamps and used a painting of our horse who won the Preakness as the front of the post card that served as a reply card. That same painting is on the wall in my grandparents? house on the farm where we got ready for the wedding ? it is also on my family?s bottles of wine made with grapes that are grown on the farm that were on each table.

Our signature drinks at the wedding were the ?Uncle Chuck? a drink named after Harry?s Uncle that his family loves and ?the Buck stops here? ? a Maker?s Mark and ginger ? my grandfather?s favorite drink, we named it after a plaque that he has on the front of his desk where Harry asked my dad permission to marry me.

Leading up to the wedding the weather was calling for lots of rain but much of our plans included outdoor activities ? lawn games, hay wagons, and being married overlooking the farm. We didn?t want to use our backup plan so we took a chance and evoked an old southern tradition which says that the sun will shine on your wedding day if you bury a bottle of bourbon at the place where you are to be married. It worked! ? Our wedding day could not have been more beautiful ? full of sunshine, love, and laughter.

A few months before the wedding my cousin Ben passed away in an accident on the farm. He was only 20 years old and we grew up on the farm together, he was more of a brother than a cousin. He and his friends were going to play bluegrass for our wedding until he passed away. We had also decided to get married in the field where by coincidence his accident occurred. We decided to still have the ceremony there and asked the bluegrass band to play ?Wagon Wheel? by Old Crow Medicine Show, one of Ben?s favorite songs as well as a theme song for our time at college in Virginia. We dedicated it to Ben.

From the bride + groom??Our favorite moments were getting into the wagon to go to the cocktail hour with our wedding party. We decided to share the ride with them on a wagon we outfitted with benches and beers on ice instead of our own wagon and it was so great. We drove through the farm drinking and laughing ? my brother and Harry?s best friend playing the guitar as the sun was going down behind us. It was perfect.

Our entrance into the tent was maybe our favorite moment of the whole day ? Our band first did the traditional call to post that every horse race starts with. They then led our parents and the wedding party in with a second line. It was amazing to watch our best friends and family dance their way into the tent in front of us. We made our way to the dance floor where many guests joined us and never left!

China Plans To Expand 4M Broadband Coverage To 70% Of Its ...

China?s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) minister Miao Wei announced yesterday?(link via Google Translate)?that the Chinese government plans to increase the number of households with broadband access, with more than 70 percent of China?s Internet users getting 4M broadband service by the end of 2013. The initiative is part of the 2013 Broadband China project, which aims to increase FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) coverage by more than 35 million households this year. In 2012, the number of households with FTTH increased 49 percent to 94 million, the MIIT said. The government also plans to add 1.3 million wireless hotspots this year, Miao said.

MIIT?s latest update on its Broadband China project follows an?earlier one in September?(link via Google Translate), when the Ministry said it plans to have broadband coverage in China hit 250 million users by the end of 2015.

Expanding broadband coverage is crucial to improving Internet infrastructure for small- to mid-sized businesses in China, especially since the country is lagging behind other member countries in the Organistion for Economic Co-operation and Development (OCED). As of December 2012, China had 564 million Internet users, a penetration rate of 39.9 percent,?according to a report by the China Internet Network Information Center.

In that report, the CNNIC also stated that stated that: ?At present the Internet penetration rate among SMEs in China still remained at a low level and the broadband construction needed to be pushed further. Meanwhile, compared with the penetration rates of online purchase and online sale of some member countries at the end of 2011 published by OECD, the portion of online sale among SMEs in China was 25.3%, and that of online sale was 26.5%, both remaining at a low level.?

After meatballs, Ikea withdraws sausages

STOCKHOLM (AP) -- After withdrawing meatballs from stores across Europe, home furnishings giant Ikea on Wednesday said it would also pull wiener sausages made by the same supplier after its own tests confirmed "a few indications of horse meat."

Ikea said it would withdraw the sausages from stores in France, Britain, Spain, Ireland and Portugal. Other stores were getting sausages from other suppliers, company spokeswoman Ylva Magnusson said.

The move comes two days after Czech food inspectors found traces of horse meat in Ikea's Swedish-made meatballs, prompting the company to pull them from store shelves in 21 European countries and in Hong Kong, Thailand and the Dominican Republic.

Stores in other countries, including the U.S. and Canada, were not affected because they received meatballs from a different supplier.

Ikea said results from its own tests confirmed some meatballs didn't just contain beef and pork, despite what their labeling said.

"Based on some hundred test results that we have received so far, there are a few indications of horse meat," Magnusson said. "Together with the Swedish supplier in question we have decided to withdraw from sales also the wiener sausages ... from that supplier."

She didn't know whether the wieners, which are supposed to be made of ground pork and beef, had also tested positive for horse meat, "but I know that at least some of the meatballs have shown traces of DNA from horse."

Horse meat has recently been found mixed into beef dishes sold across Europe, including in frozen supermarket meals. It has also been found in meals served at restaurants, schools and hospitals. Authorities say the scandal is a case of fraudulent labeling but does not pose a health risk.

Portuguese authorities said late Tuesday they had seized 79 metric tons (87 U.S. tons) of beef products containing traces of horse meat in recent days and opened criminal proceedings against five local companies. Portugal's Food Safety Agency said it made the seizures at companies that process, package and distribute meat to large retail outlets.

The agency said in a statement on its website that it also took almost 19,000 pre-packed products from Portuguese stores after detecting horse meat in them. They included lasagnas, hamburgers and meatballs.

The '20th International Dead Sea Ultra Marathon' to take place on ...

The Dead Sea Ultra Marathon is the main fund raising event for the Neurological Society, which has contributed to the treatment of more than 1500 neurological patients over many years.

HRH Prince Firas Bin Raad, Head of the Neurological Society, stated, "Over the past 20 years, The Dead Sea Ultra Marathon has witnessed continued growth and international recognition - and we are proud of what has been achieved.

He added, "The success of the Marathon would not be possible without the support of our sponsors, volunteers and media representatives - all of whom contribute enormously in making the Marathon a very enjoyable and exciting event. We are all looking forward to this event in the Spring."

Founded in 1986, the Neurological Society was headed by HRH Princess Majda Raad until 1995, when HRH Prince Firas took over. Its primary aim is to assist needy neurological patients by providing them with financial help for necessary surgical procedures, and to increase awareness of neurological diseases and traumas.

The Society is expanding its role in the treatment of neurological patients and becoming a developmental organization by creating social and technical programs in cooperation with related official and non-official sectors.

Leon Lai happy as ambassador for HK entertainment

HONG KONG (AP) ? Leon Lai says he's delighted to be the ambassador for Entertainment Expo Hong Kong.

The veteran entertainer says he wanted to do something and Hong Kong has a lot of singers and actors, "who are making albums and shooting films here, they're supporting this industry as well."

He spoke Tuesday before the expo starting March 18 that covers film, television, digital entertainment and music.

Lai also says he enjoyed Taiwanese director Ang Lee's "Life of Pi." The special effects-heavy film was made mostly in Taiwan and won four Academy Awards.

But Lai says comparisons to the government support offered in Taiwan are not useful for Hong Kong's film industry.

It depends on what filmmakers ask. He says, "If we have a reasonable request, I think the government will support us."

Kyocera Torque hands-on

Kyocera Torque.

We're on the ground at Pepcom's MobileFocus Global, where we've just had the chance to get some hands-on time with Sprint and Kycera's latest smartphone, the Torque. Announced in late January and coming to market on Mar. 8, the Torque is the Japanese company's first ruggedized Android phone.

It runs a 1GHz CPU, a WVGA screen and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, pretty run of the mill stuff for a low-priced smartphone. But what's unique about the Torque, aside from its water resistance and toughened shell, is the system it's employing for audio playback.

Instead of using a traditional speaker, the Torque is fitted with skin a ceramic-based solution that vibrates the shell of the handset. That means it can be heard through skin and bone conduction, as well as through hardcore construction ear-protection gear. The effect works pretty well, and it's easy to see how this kind of feature could be useful to anyone working in a noisy environment.

Check out our hands-on video and gallery after the break. The Sprint Kyocera Torque launches on Mar. 8 for $99 on-contract.

Ikea's Swedish meatballs latest victim of horsemeat scandal

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Swedish furniture giant Ikea was drawn into Europe's widening food labeling scandal Monday as authorities said they had detected horse meat in frozen meatballs labeled as beef and pork and sold in 13 countries across the continent.

The Czech State Veterinary Administration said that horse meat was found in one-kilogram (2.2 pound) packs of frozen meatballs made in Sweden and shipped to the Czech Republic for sale in Ikea stores there. A total of 760 kilograms (1,675 pounds) of the meatballs were stopped from reaching the shelves.

Ikea spokeswoman Ylva Magnusson said meatballs from the same batch had gone out to Slovakia, Hungary, France, Britain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Ireland. Magnusson said meatballs from that batch were taken off the shelves in Ikea stores in all those countries. Other shipments of meatballs were not affected, including to the U.S., even though they all come from the same Swedish supplier, Magnusson said.

"Our global recommendation is to not recall or stop selling meatballs," she said.

However, the company's Swedish branch announced on its Facebook page that it won't sell or serve any meatballs at its stores in Sweden out of concern for "potential worries among our customers."

Magnusson said Ikea saw no reason to extend that guidance globally. She said Ikea was conducting its own tests of the affected batch "to validate" the Czech results. She also said that two weeks ago Ikea tested a range of frozen food products, including meatballs, and found no traces of horse meat.

"But, of course, we take the tests that Czech authorities have done very seriously," Magnusson said. "We don't tolerate any other ingredients than those on the label."

European authorities have said the horse meat found in lasagna and other prepared dishes is a case of fraudulent labeling but does not pose a health risk.

Ikea's trademark blue-and-yellow stores typically feature a restaurant that serves traditional Swedish food, including meatballs served with boiled or mashed potatoes, gravy and lingonberry jam. Meatballs ? "Kottbullar" in Swedish ? are also available in the frozen foods section.

Magnusson said all of the meatballs are supplied by Gunnar Dafgard AB, a family-owned frozen foods company in southwestern Sweden. Calls to the company were not immediately returned, but it posted a brief statement on its website saying "the batch in question has been blocked and we are investigating the situation."

Sweden's food safety authority said it wasn't taking any action but was waiting for Czech authorities to specify the quantity of horsemeat detected.

"If it's less than 1 percent it could mean that they handled horsemeat at the same facility. If it's more, we assess that it's been mixed into the product," said Karin Cerenius of Sweden's National Food Agency.

European Union officials were meeting Monday to discuss tougher food labeling rules after the discovery of horse meat in a range of frozen supermarket meals such as burgers and lasagna that were supposed to contain beef or pork.

The Czech authority also announced Monday that it found horse meat in beef burgers imported from Poland during random tests of food products.

Spanish authorities, meanwhile, announced that traces of horse meat were found in a beef cannelloni product by one of the brands of Nestle, a Switzerland-based food giant.

In a statement on its website, Nestle Spain said that after carrying out tests on meat supplied to its factories in Spain it was withdrawing six "La Cocinera" products and one "Buitoni" product from store shelves.

It said it was taking the action after the traces of horse meat were found in beef bought from a supplier in central Spain. Nestle said it was taking legal action against the company, adding that the products would be replaced by ones with 100 percent beef.

Some EU member states are pressing for tougher labeling rules to regain consumer confidence.

The 27-nation bloc must agree on binding origin disclosures for food product ingredients, starting with a better labeling of meat products, German Agriculture Minister Ilse Aigner said.

"Consumers have every right to the greatest-possible transparency," she insisted.

Austria backs the German initiative; but others like Ireland say existing rules are sufficient although Europe-wide controls must be strengthened to address the problem of fraudulent labeling.

The scandal has created a split between nations like Britain which see further rules as a protectionist hindrance of free trade under the bloc's single market, and those calling for tougher regulation.

Processed food products ? a business segment with traditionally low margins that often leads producers to hunt for the cheapest suppliers ? often contain ingredients from multiple suppliers in different countries, who themselves at times subcontract production to others, making it hard to monitor every link in the production chain.

Standardized DNA checks with meat suppliers and more stringent labeling rules will add costs that producers will most likely hand down to consumers, making food more expensive.

The scandal began in Ireland in mid-January when the country announced the results of its first-ever DNA tests on beef products. It tested frozen beef burgers taken from store shelves and found that more than a third of brands at five supermarkets contained at least a trace of horse. The sample of one brand sold by British supermarket kingpin Tesco was more than a quarter horse.

Such discoveries have spread like wildfire across Europe as governments, supermarkets, meat traders and processors began their own DNA testing of products labeled beef and have been forced to withdraw tens of millions of products from store shelves.

More than a dozen nations have detected horse flesh in processed products such as factory-made burger patties, lasagnas, meat pies and meat-filled pastas. The investigations have been complicated by elaborate supply chains involving multiple cross-border middlemen.

Insert Coin semifinalist: Radiator Labs wants to help you control your heat

Just about any apartment-dwelling urbanite can tell you that radiators are a bit of a necessary evil in the world of city living. What if there was a way to control the heat to individual rental units, without relying entirely on a landlord's temperature-controlling omnipotence? The Radiator Labs team has developed a device to help realize this dream. It's essentially housing that sits on-top of an individual radiator unit, controlling heat transfer to a room. Turn it off, and the insulation hampers the heat from making a room too hot. Turn it on, and the ducted fan spreads the heat out to the room.

Radiator Labs has a bit more info on its page, which you can check out in the source link below. You can also view graphical breakdown of the technology after the break.

Maggie Hendricks ? Ronda Rousey SUB1 Liz Carmouche: The thing about Rousey's armbar is that it's going to be unstoppable until someone stops it. Brilliant, right? Because of the move's unpredictability, it's equally difficult to predict who will be the one who can stop it.

[Also: Ronda Rousey doesn't want to touch UFC title belt before fighting]

Cagereader ? My pick: Ronda Rousey by first round armbar. Yes, again. I don't think anyone's got her figured out yet, and her aggression is too much to deal with for anyone at this point. -- Dan Butera

Cagereader ? Rousey. She has more to offer than Carmouche. I think it will be Rousey's longest fight ever since Carmouche is a scrappy chick. She definitely has her work cut out for her. -- Charlotte Petroskey

***

Kevin Iole ? Dan Henderson TKO2 Lyoto Machida: Henderson is going to grind on Machida and wear him down until he gets enough space to land his big right hand.

Maggie Hendricks ? Dan Henderson W3 Lyoto Machida: As Kevin Iole points out in his column, Machida is not the elusive fighter he once was. Henderson will wear him down and take the bout.

Cagereader ? I'll take Machida over Henderson. Machida's height, reach, and long torso is going to make it very hard for Hendo to impose his will. Throw in Machida's speed advantage, faster punches, better cardio, and youth, and this one could end up being lopsided. Dan Henderson, as always, does have a puncher's chance, but that is about it in my opinion. -- Buddy Kreutzer

***

Kevin Iole ? Urijah Faber SUB3 Ivan Menjivar: Faber hasn't fought like a star in a while and the pressure is on him to do so. He's primed for a good performance and I think he delivers it.

Maggie Hendricks ? Urijah Faber SUB2 Ivan Menjivar: Fighting in California, Faber should be able to get back on the winning track and outgrapple Menjivar for a win.

[Also: How Dana White's about-face on women's MMA became official]

Cagereader ? Though both Faber and his opponent are very dynamic and multidimensional, predict the intense energy will lead to an unpredictable TKO with Faber winning! -- Ernie Brewer

***

Kevin Iole ? Josh Neer W3 Court McGee: This is a flip-a-coin match so I'm going to go with the guy with more experience.

Maggie Hendricks ? Court McGee W3 Josh Neer: Yep, pretty much what Kevin said, so my coin flipped to McGee.

Cagereader ? Hard not to like McGee's drop to 170. His smothering style should win the day. McGee by Decision. - John Wilcox

***

Kevin Iole ? Josh Koscheck W3 Robbie Lawler: Lawler is simply not the same fighter he once was. I think Koscheck wins a pretty wide decision here.

Maggie Hendricks ? Josh Koscheck W3 Robbie Lawler: Though Koscheck is coming off of a loss, Lawler hasn't done much to show he can stop Koscheck's wrestling or striking.

Cagereader ? I think Koscheck to beat Lawler. Kos will be desperate to get back into the win column and I see him wearing down Robbie with his outstanding wrestling ability and finishing him late on as Lawler tires. Koscheck by RNC round 3. - Craig Donaldson

Cruz, whose aggressive approach has made him the target of mainstream news outlets which ignore similar tactics by liberals, is now Cher's favorite outlet for her social media vitriol.

AUSA kicks off last winter symposium in Florida

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Army News Service, Feb. 20, 2013) -- For 14 years now the Association of the United States Army has held its winter symposium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. This year's event will be the last in the Sunshine State.

During opening comments at the 2013 Association of the United States Army, or AUSA, Institute of Land Warfare Winter Symposium and Exposition, the AUSA president and former chief of staff of the Army, retired Gen. Gordon R. Sullivan, told his audience, about 500 in number, that this year's event would be the last in Fort Lauderdale.

The retired general also pointed out that the number of Army attendees at the event has dropped. The number of foreign military in attendance now nearly equaled the number of U.S. military attendees, he said.

Nevertheless, the three-day event features an array of Army general officers and panels presenting on a variety of subjects from transition, to equipping to Army networks.

The opening presenter, Gen. Robert W. Cone, commander of Army Training and Doctrine Command, or TRADOC, discussed the Army's transition from a focus on execution, to a focus on preparation.

"As we look to the future, we have to be prepared for both strategic and operational adaptation," Cone said.

The Army was successful in Iraq, and has been successful in Afghanistan in dealing with counter-insurgency, stability operations, and operations from static bases, and has been accustomed to a robust support infrastructure. But he said that's not enough any longer.

"That is not the full range of military operations," he said.

The Army must move beyond counter-insurgency now, which has been for many young Soldiers the only thing they have known during their military careers, Cone said. That move will require an approach that includes an emphasis on doctrine, organization, training, materiel, leadership and education, personnel and facilities.

Additional panels include a discussion on strategic land power, with Lt. Gen. Keith C. Walker, also with TRADOC; and an afternoon panel with Heidi Shyu, assistant secretary of the Army for acquisition, logistics and technology, to discuss efficiencies in procurement.

Also scheduled to present during the three-day event is Gen. Dennis L. Via, of U.S. Army Materiel Command; Grace Bochenek, Ph.D., the Army's chief technology officer, who will discuss the Army's science and technology investment; a panel that discusses Army partnering with the industrial base; and a panel discussion on the future of the Army's Network Integration Evaluation efforts.

Also interspersed throughout the event are "AUSA TECH TEN" events, ten-minute presentations on various technology items, including fuel cells, GPS-denied operations, and development of sensor technology for the military.

The three day AUSA symposium runs Feb. 20-22.
