The 7 Best Foods For Seniors - Retirement Homes

Nearly half of Americans usually make New Year?s resolutions, but less than eight per cent actually follow through on their pledges, the Journal of Clinical Psychology reported last year.

And although New Year?s Day already passed, it?s never too late to set personal goals, and one great way to start 2013 is by eating healthier.

Courtesy of AARP.com, here are seven of the best foods for people over the age of 50:

1/ Apples- These fruits can help to reduce cholesterol, so remember the old adage, ?an apple a day keeps the doctor away.?

2/ Asparagus- Featuring the carotene lycopene, these vegetables can work to reduce the chances of contracting prostate cancer.

3/ Blueberries- Packed with Vitamins C and K, pick up a few of these berries the next time you?re at the grocery store.

4/ Broccoli- Full of fiber, this green vegetable can help boost your immune system.

5/ Butternut squash- If you want to keep your eyes strong, take advantage of the beta-carotene in butternut squash.

6/ Dark chocolate- To help protect your heart, enjoy a piece of dark chocolate for the antioxidants it provides.

7/ Coffee- Both regular and decaf, coffee can help prevent heart attacks.

Eating healthy can be convenient if you live in an assisted living community, but if you live alone and buy your own groceries, make sure to add these items to your next list.

Suspects of Credit Union Robberies Caught, Charged

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah- (ABC4 News)- Two suspects from Credit Union robberies have been caught and charged for crimes.

Alexander Gregory Jones, and Mehvish Masih have been taken into custody and charged for the robberies of the Cyprus Credit Union off Redwood Road in Riverton and Mountain America Credit Union on South Highland Drive in Holladay.

Law enforcement officers received information from two witnesses who identified Jones as the suspect, from still photos taken from the surveillance videos of the robberies at both credit unions.

Both citizens were familiar with Jones, and claimed that he had offered to sell one of them a blue Ford Taurus? which was the get-away-vehicle used in the first robbery. Jones had also mentioned having possession of a white Audi convertible. The suspects escaped the second robbery in a similar vehicle.

On December 13, 2012, law enforcement officers conducted a traffic stop of a stolen white Audi with a black convertible top. They identified the driver as Mr. Jones and the passenger in the vehicle as Mehvish Masih.

A later investigation of Jones? telephone showed information and internet searches regarding the two robberies.

On January 3, 2013, law enforcement officers interviewed Masih at her residence in regards to the robberies. Masih confessed to being the driver in both robberies. She also claimed to have written out the demand notes used in each robbery.

Tips to Jog Yourself into Health, Fitness and Weight Loss | Bron in ...

Jogging, one of the simplest exercises, can be done almost anywhere and requires no special equipment. Jogging offers several health benefits and is one of the most effective calorie burning exercises. To help get started jogging or to get more out of your current routine, use the following tips.

Your footwear is extremely important when running or jogging. Also be sure to wear thick socks made for athletic shoes. Your feet and ankles will feel a lot of impact when running, so if you don?t wear good running shoes, you put yourself at risk for several problems. They need to fit your feet well and be comfortable and you need to replace them when they start to wear out. To find the best ones for you, you may need to try several brands and styles. If your shoes don?t fit well, or they are in bad condition, you can get blisters on your feet, and you are more prone to sprains and even knee injuries. To take care of your feet, you have to pay attention to your shoes, which is the only real expense to running.

Studying the health benefits of this enjoyable activity is a good idea. On days where you don?t feel like running, knowing the benefits can be a great motivator. Jogging is great activity if you are trying to lose weight but you have to be consistent.

Jogging will also help keep your bones strong and is great for cardiovascular health. Because jogging releases endorphins, it is an effective mood enhancer. So, if you are feeling depressed and don?t want to go running, that is the best to go because it?ll help you feel better.

Do be sure to learn how to warm up, stretch, and then afterwards you?ll want to warm down and stretch a little, as well. Don?t run at your full speed and then stop all of a sudden, but give your body a chance to gradually cool down. So a good rule of thumb is to start and end at a slow pace and you ease into the transition. Then it?s a good idea to do some light stretches. If you?re interested you can encourage your heart to relax more by simply elevating both feet to a comfortable point above the plane of your heart. In conclusion, use the techniques for jogging that we just talked about to get your health back to where you want it to be, and also so that you keep your motivation high. Just keep in mind that you always need to keep running as part of your normal routine if you hope to get the most out of it. That?s why it?s so important to be careful and sensible when you run or jog, so you?ll be able to keep going with a minimum of problems to slow you down.

Obama: US war in Afghanistan winding down

WASHINGTON (AP) ? With the war in Afghanistan winding down after 11 years, President Barack Obama says the time is right for U.S. forces to let Afghans do their own fighting.

In his radio and Internet address Saturday, Obama says U.S. forces will shift to a support role as Afghan soldiers take the lead in defending their country.

Obama met Friday with Afghan President Hamid Karzai at the White House and agreed that U.S. troops will go home in larger numbers starting this spring ? several months ahead of schedule. He says "America's war in Afghanistan will be over" by the end of 2014.

In the Republican address, freshman Sen. Deb Fischer of Nebraska says that with the "fiscal cliff" averted, Congress and the president must focus on cutting "out-of-control" government spending.

Domestic Short Hair - Lisbeth - Medium - Young - Female - Cat

Born approximately April 24, 2012, Lisbeth is a special little Tabby kitty. Lisbeth is named after the character in the book, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," because of certain similarities in their beginnings. She is resourceful, beautiful, clever, and charming, and unafraid of cats and dogs much bigger than herself. Found as a tiny, hungry, and very thirsty kitten all alone in the world, Lisbeth was able to eat from a bowl, and eat she did that night she was found. She fit in her foster home right off, getting along well with other pets. Miss Lisbeth has a delicate, little "meow," loves to play with toy mice (and woe unto any real mouse whoever is foolhardy enough to end up in her clutches), loves cat treats, and will come running when she hears the shake of a bag full of the treats. She would do well in most any household, as long as there are treats, toys, and love. Lisbeth can be picked up and handled, but she prefers to give her affection time at her own choosing. She does snuggle on a lap or a shoulder, but likes to come and go. Lisbeth has a mind and a will of her own, isn't afraid of strangers, and is open to meeting new people. She has been vet checked, spayed, vaccinated, dewormed, and tested negative for FIV/FeLV. Call 507-451-4512 to meet Lisbeth in her foster home. Her adoption fee is $135. (M&DS)

Ordinary glass's extraordinary properties revealed

Jan. 6, 2013 ? Technologically valuable ultrastable glasses can be produced in days or hours with properties corresponding to those that have been aged for thousands of years, computational and laboratory studies have confirmed.

Aging makes for higher quality glassy materials because they have slowly evolved toward a more stable molecular condition. This evolution can take thousands or millions of years, but manufacturers must work faster. Armed with a better understanding of how glasses age and evolve, researchers at the universities of Chicago and Wisconsin-Madison raise the possibility of designing a new class of materials at the molecular level via a vapor-deposition process.

"In attempts to work with aged glasses, for example, people have examined amber," said Juan de Pablo, UChicago's Liew Family Professor in Molecular Theory and Simulations. "Amber is a glass that has been aged millions of years, but you cannot engineer that material. You get what you get." de Pablo and Wisconsin co-authors Sadanand Singh and Mark Ediger report their findings in the latest issue of Nature Materials.

Ultrastable glasses could find potential applications in the production of stronger metals and in faster-acting pharmaceuticals. The latter may sound surprising, but drugs with the amorphous molecular structure of ultrastable glass could avoid crystallization during storage and be delivered more rapidly in the bloodstream than pharmaceuticals with a semi-crystalline structure. Amorphous metals, likewise, are better for high-impact applications than crystalline metals because of their greater strength.

The Nature Materials paper describes computer simulations that Singh, a doctoral student in chemical engineering at UW-Madison, carried out with de Pablo to follow-up some intriguing results from Ediger's laboratory.

Growing stable glasses

Ediger, like researchers for decades before him, had been growing materials via vapor deposition in a vacuum chamber. In this process, glasses are created when a sample a sample material is heated, then vaporizes and finally condenses and grows atop an experimental surface.

Several years ago, he discovered that glasses grown this way on a specially prepared surface that is kept within a certain temperature range exhibit far more stability than ordinary glasses. Previous researchers must have grown this material under the same temperature conditions, but failed to recognize the significance of what they had done, Ediger said.

Ediger speculated that growing glasses under these conditions, which he compares to the Tetris video game, gives molecules extra room to arrange themselves into a more stable configuration. But he needed Singh and de Pablo's computer simulations to confirm his suspicions that he had actually produced a highly evolved, ordinary glass rather than an entirely new material.

"There's interest in making these materials on the computer because you have direct access to the structure, and you can therefore determine the relationship between the arrangement of the molecules and the physical properties that you measure," said de Pablo, a former UW-Madison faculty member who joined UChicago's new Institute for Molecular Engineering earlier this year.

There are challenges, though, to simulating the evolution of glasses on a computer. Scientists can cool a glassy material at the rate of one degree per second in the laboratory, but the slowest computational studies can only simulate cooling at a rate of 100 million degrees per second. "We cannot cool it any slower because the calculations would take forever," de Pablo said.

"It had been believed until now that there is no correlation between the mechanical properties of a glass and the molecular structure; that somehow the properties of a glass are "hidden" somewhere and that there are no obvious structural signatures," de Pablo said.

Creating better materials

"What we found here is that there are actually differences, it's just that you had to create better glassy materials. Once you create these materials, you see that the structure, the differences between ordinary and stable glasses are clearly there and are actually pronounced."

Ultrastable glasses achieve their stability in a manner analogous to the most efficiently packed, multishaped objects in Tetris, each consisting of four squares in various configurations that rain from the top of the screen.

"This is a little bit like the molecules in my deposition apparatus raining down onto this surface, and the goal is to perfectly pack a film, not to have any voids left," Ediger said.

The object of Tetris is to manipulate the objects so that they pack into a perfectly tight pattern at the bottom of the screen. "The difference is, when you play the game, you have to actively manipulate the pieces in order to build a well-packed solid," Ediger said. "In the vapor deposition, nature does it for us."

But in Tetris and experiments alike, when the objects or molecules descend too quickly, the result is a poorly packed, void-riddled pattern.

"In the experiment, if you either rain the molecules too fast or choose a low temperature at which there's no mobility at the surface, then this trick doesn't work," Ediger said. Then it would be like taking a bucket of odd-shaped pieces and just dumping them on the floor. There are all sorts of voids and gaps because the molecules didn't have any opportunity to find a good way of packing."

Poll: Few Americans know all the risks of obesity

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Heart disease and diabetes get all the attention, but what about the many other ways obesity can damage your health?

Carrying too many pounds may lead to or worsen some types of cancer, arthritis, sleep apnea, even infertility. But a new poll suggests few Americans realize the links.

Only about one-quarter of people think it's possible for someone to be very overweight and still healthy, according to the poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Ask about the most serious consequences, and more than 7 in 10 Americans can correctly tick off heart disease and diabetes. Heart disease is the nation's leading killer, and diabetes and obesity are twin epidemics, as rates of both have climbed in recent years.

The other consequences aren't so well known.

"People are often shocked to hear how far-reaching the effects of obesity are," said Jennifer Dimitriou, a bariatric dietitian at New York's Montefiore Medical Center.

Only 7 percent of people surveyed mentioned cancer, although doctors long have known that fat increases the risk of developing cancers of the colon, breast, prostate, uterus and certain other sites. Plus, being overweight can make it harder to spot tumors early and to treat them.

Then there's the toll on your joints, especially the knees. About 15 percent of people knew obesity can contribute to arthritis, a vicious cycle as the joint pain then makes it harder to exercise and shed pounds.

High blood pressure, high cholesterol and strokes were fairly low on the list. Infertility didn't get a mention.

Also, 5 percent put respiratory problems on the list. Studies show people who are overweight are at increased risk of sleep apnea and asthma, and that dropping pounds can help improve their symptoms.

Knowing more about the myriad ways obesity affects health could help motivate people to get more active and eat better before full-blown disease strikes, Dimitriou said.

"Most people want to become healthier. It's the know-how, and understanding what the consequences are," she said.

But only 52 percent of those surveyed said they've discussed the health risks of being overweight with a doctor.

In another complication, the AP-NORC Center survey found that about half of people think their weight is just about right, and only 12 percent of parents think their child is overweight. That's even though government figures show two-thirds of U.S. adults, and one-third of children and teens, are either overweight or obese.

If you're surrounded by overweight people, especially in your family, "then that's all you know, and that to you is normal," Dimitriou said.

The AP-NORC Center survey was conducted Nov. 21 through Dec. 14. It involved landline and cellphone interviews with 1,011 adults nationwide and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points.

The Long Journey from Javert to Valjean

A guest post from my sainted father, Galen C. Dalrymple:

*

By Galen C. Dalrymple

Much has been written, by people far wiser than I, about the characters and story of Victor Hugo?s Les Miserables. I just want to tell you my story and how it relates to Javert and Valjean.

I was born into a God-fearing family.? They were God-fearing because they were raised in literal fear of God. The midwestern church we attended belonged to the most legalistic denomination of Christianity on the face of the planet. One could only cower in tremendous fear before God because of our sin. The law was THE LAW, and it must not be broken. If you did break it ? even the tiniest snippet ? you were sliding down the slippery pathway to fire and brimstone. God was a stern-faced God, red with anger, throwing thunderbolts and eager to destroy those who were not pure. If you sinned between when you last asked forgiveness and when you died, you would be thrown into the lake that was prepared for the devil and his angels, to suffer horrendously and eternally.

I was far from pure. I recall from a very young age a tremendous despair welling up within me. I didn?t want to go to hell. I was terrified of it. But no matter how hard I tried, I could never measure up to The Law. I recall the first time I saw a Playboy magazine. My best friend?s dad (we were in elementary school at the time) had a subscription and my friend sneaked it out of the house and showed it to me. Having just entered puberty, I was both fascinated and repelled. Fascination won out, and I entered a very dark place in my spirit because I knew I should not be looking at those pictures, but I couldn?t stop myself.

I harbored that angst in my soul as long as I could ? knowing that I?d be shipped off to hell if I died because of what I?d done. So, I ?went forward? to confess my sin (never in specific ? the church seemed to be very content to settle for generalities such as ?I know I?ve sinned and want God?s forgiveness.?) Thus began a pattern throughout my adolescence that replayed itself over and over again. No matter what the sin was, I was tormented with guilt, picturing the red-faced God regarding me with disgust. It is not a comfortable feeling to believe that God finds you despicable. Yet it was the only ?truth? I could see: I had failed to obey the law, so I was doomed.

It wasn?t until many years later that the concept of grace and mercy came alive to me. I was teaching a class on Romans, and I began to see it with a new mind and new eyes. I saw that Paul struggled with right and wrong, obedience and failure, and yet he was confident of God?s grace. I then happened to read Philip Yancey?s What?s So Amazing About Grace? and also Brennan Manning?s Ragamuffin Gospel and Ruthless Trust.?Finally, after having lived for so many years certain of being cast into hell, I could breathe in the Breath of Life.

Now, as I am in my sixth decade of life, my soul has a tremendous peace. Not because I?ve ceased sinning. Though my sins now are different, they?re no less sinful. I am still the same old sinner I always have been. I can?t lay hold on anything that would commend me into the love and forgiveness of God save for one thing: the thoroughly unmerited grace of God in Christ. Jesus pleads my case. Jesus died for me. The one who could have condemned the woman caught in adultery but faced down her accusers ? will likewise face down my accuser in the day of judgment.

There are many who live enslaved to fears of certain hell-fire because they prefer, like Javert, to live according to the rules, believing that the rules of life are all that there is and all that matters. And the Law, properly understood, does matter. It forms us, convicts us, educates us in the character of God, and shows us the path of gratitude. But the same God who spoke the Law into being spoke Grace as his final word.?Some churches present only the vindictive God of hell-fire and not the man who took the adulterous woman and said, ?Then neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more.?

Did Jesus really think she?d sin no more? Of course not. She would sin again. The very One who had every right to cast the first stone that day ? didn?t. I can expect the same when he deals with me, because He never changes. He could cast the first stone, but won?t. Why? Because he has already paid the price for my sin. As the old hymn of Horatio Spafford puts it, ?My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought! My sin, not in part but the whole, Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!?

Why do people find it so hard to believe in grace? Because grace offends our pride. We do not want to believe that we need grace. We do not want to recognize that we are hopeless and helpless by ourselves. We want to believe that when it comes to something as vitally and eternally important as the destiny of our souls, that we are in control. We hesitate to entrust our eternal fate to someone we cannot see ? especially if we believe him to be the red-faced God, the God who looks upon the Law-breakers with anger and disgust.

That?s where we?re wrong. There is someone who cares for our salvation even more than we do. Jesus took an unparalleled interest in our souls, submitting himself even to death on a cross so that our sins could be nailed there forever. Instead of delighting in the destruction of the wicked, he weeps over the choice that they have made for themselves. You see, those who never come to God have made the same decision as those who hold to legalism: ?I?ll do it my way and you, God, can just go to hell.?

I?m old enough now and have enough miles on me to understand how weak and flawed I am. I?ve been Javert ? and failed. Every time I try to be Javert, I fail. And when I confess my failure to be Javert, then I am Valjean, resting in the grace of God. Valjean was confronted with unmerited grace and it led to his salvation. Javert was confronted with unmerited grace ? and he refused to accept it, refused to live in a world where his fate would defend upon the mercy of another. Some are saved by accepting grace. Others are destroyed by rejecting it. Javert throws himself down into death rather than live in a world where The Law does not have the final word ? while Valjean lives beautifully in the kingdom of grace.

Take it from one who?s been there: legalism is no way to live. It?s a living death. And for those who are liberated from legalism, as the song says in?Les Miserables, we will not be slaves again.

James 2:13 is so beautiful: ?Mercy triumphs over judgment.? Therein lies our hope, that the God of mercy triumphs over the law of sin and death. On the day of judgment, if even a single human is to be saved, it will be because mercy triumphs over judgment.

It doesn?t matter that I will never be enough. All the matters is that the grace of Christ is sufficient.

A Ball of Super Hot Metal Is an Awesomely Noisy Way to Heat Your Water

Microwaves are a fine way to warm water. So are stoves. But neither of them quite compare to dropping in a sphere of red-hot nickel to do the trick. Thanks to a little something called the Leidenfrost effect, the ball actually surrounds itself with a blanket of steam that keeps the rest of the water away. More »

Can Colin Powell Really Be Speaker of the House?

Speaker of the House John Boehner Speaker of the House John Boehner kept his hold on the gavel, despite unwitting challenges from Colin Powell and Allen West.

John Boehner was narrowly re-elected as speaker of the House of Representatives on Thursday. Dissident Republicans cast votes for former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Tea Party favorite Allen West, who was voted out of Congress in November. Do you have to be a member of Congress to be Speaker?

Probably. The Constitution states only that ?The House of Representatives shall chuse their Speaker and other Officers.? Many journalists, as well as the clerk of the House of Representatives, take this to mean that an outsider can be elected speaker. Even the Explainer once repeated this popular bit of constitutional mythology. Unfortunately, it probably isn?t true. The drafters of the Constitution likely took for granted that the speaker had to be a member of Congress. In his 1801 Manual of Parliamentary Practice, Thomas Jefferson likened the election of the leader of the Senate?and, by implication, the speaker of the House?to the British Parliament?s tradition of physically dragging the elected speaker of the House of Commons to the chair. That comparison is revealing, because the speaker of the House of Commons is elected from its membership. In addition, state legislatures always drew speakers from their own memberships, even though the state constitutions in place at the time the federal Constitution was drafted did not explicitly require it. Perhaps the clearest indication of the Framers? intent comes from longstanding practice: Every speaker of the House has been a member of Congress. To the Explainer?s knowledge, no one from the founding generation ever cast a vote for a non-member. (The modern habit of voting for non-members is merely an act of protest, in any event.)

The Constitution lists explicit requirements for other offices. The president, for example, must be a natural born citizen, 35 or older, and a U.S. resident for at least 14 years. To serve in the House, you have to be at least 25 years old, a citizen for at least seven years, and live in the state you represent. The lack of explicit requirements for speaker implies to some interpreters that the framers deliberately opened the speaker?s post to anyone?an infant, a foreigner, or even a jar of jelly beans can hold the office. The other indications of the Framers? intent, however, likely outweigh the Constitution?s vagueness on this point. Unfortunately, since the courts can?t decide the issue unless the House elects a non-member, this constitutional myth persists.

Although he has beaten Colin Powell?s unwitting challenge, John Boenher shouldn?t revel in his place in the line of succession. According to some legal scholars, he can?t ascend to the presidency. If the president and vice president are both incapacitated, the Constitution requires Congress to declare ?what Officer shall then act as President.? The current federal succession statute, which provides that the speaker assumes the presidency under those circumstances, is arguably unconstitutional. In some contexts, ?officer? refers to any government official, but the Constitution sometimes refers only to members of the executive branch as ?officers.? There are some persuasive reasons to think the Framers would have considered the speaker ineligible for the presidency. For one thing, the speaker plays a role in impeachment proceedings, creating a conflict of interest. In addition, it?s impermissible to serve simultaneously in the legislative and executive branches. If the speaker had to temporarily assume the presidency?for example, if the president and vice president were simultaneously injured or missing?he or she would have to resign the legislative post. Once the president?s incapacity passed, the speaker would be out of a job.

Got a question about today?s news? Ask the Explainer.

(AP) ? While the tax package that Congress passed New Year's Day will protect 99 percent of Americans from an income tax increase, most of them will still end up paying more federal taxes in 2013.

That's because the legislation did nothing to prevent a temporary reduction in the Social Security payroll tax from expiring. In 2012, that 2-percentage-point cut in the payroll tax was worth about $1,000 to a worker making $50,000 a year.

The Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan Washington research group, estimates that 77 percent of American households will face higher federal taxes in 2013 under the agreement negotiated between President Barack Obama and Senate Republicans. High-income families will feel the biggest tax increases, but many middle- and low-income families will pay higher taxes too.

Households making between $40,000 and $50,000 will face an average tax increase of $579 in 2013, according to the Tax Policy Center's analysis. Households making between $50,000 and $75,000 will face an average tax increase of $822.

"For most people, it's just the payroll tax," said Roberton Williams, a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center.

The tax increases could be a lot higher. A huge package of tax cuts first enacted under President George W. Bush was scheduled to expire Tuesday as part of the "fiscal cliff." The Bush-era tax cuts lowered taxes for families at every income level, reduced investment taxes and the estate tax, and enhanced a number of tax credits, including a $1,000-per-child credit.

The package passed Tuesday by the Senate and House extends most the Bush-era tax cuts for individuals making less than $400,000 and married couples making less than $450,000.

Obama said the deal "protects 98 percent of Americans and 97 percent of small business owners from a middle-class tax hike. While neither Democrats nor Republicans got everything they wanted, this agreement is the right thing to do for our country."

The income threshold covers more than 99 percent of all households, exceeding Obama's claim, according to the Tax Policy Center. However, the increase in payroll taxes will hit nearly every wage earner.

Social Security is financed by a 12.4 percent tax on wages up to $113,700, with employers paying half and workers paying the other half. Obama and Congress reduced the share paid by workers from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent for 2011 and 2012, saving a typical family about $1,000 a year.

Obama pushed hard to enact the payroll tax cut for 2011 and to extend it through 2012. But it was never fully embraced by either party, and this time around, there was general agreement to let it expire.

The new tax package would increase the income tax rate from 35 percent to 39.6 percent on income above $400,000 for individuals and $450,000 for married couples. Investment taxes would increase for people who fall in the new top tax bracket.

High-income families will also pay higher taxes this year as part of Obama's 2010 health care law. As part of that law, a new 3.8 percent tax is being imposed on investment income for individuals making more than $200,000 a year and couples making more than $250,000.

Together, the new tax package and Obama's health care law will produce significant tax increases for many high-income families.

For 2013, households making between $500,000 and $1 million would get an average tax increase of $14,812, according to the Tax Policy Center analysis. Households making more than $1 million would get an average tax increase of $170,341.

"If you're rich, you're almost certain to get a big tax increase," Williams said.

Playoff picks: Packers a good bet this time

Six days after Adrian Peterson blistered them for nearly 200 yards and helped lift his team to a stunning playoff berth, the Green Bay Packers get another taste of "A.D."

This time, they will deal with "All Day" Peterson at Lambeau Field. And in the playoffs.

The stakes are similar to last week for the Vikings, who would have been out of the playoffs had they lost to Green Bay, which already owned the division title. The venue, obviously, is different.

If that seems like a big edge for the Packers, well, they lost their last two postseason home games, both to the Giants, who went on to win the Super Bowl each time. They dropped a 31-14 verdict to Minnesota after the 2004 season, the only time in 104 matchups these NFC North rivals have met in the playoffs.

So Green Bay is 1-3 in recent home playoff games on the tundra. That doesn't diminish the challenge facing Minnesota, an 8-point underdog.

"It put us in a spot that we've been wanting to be, wanted to get here since April 23 of last year when we started OTAs," Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder said of the win over the Packers that got them a trip to Green Bay, where they lost 23-14 in the regular season.

"It's going to be tough going to Lambeau. Obviously it's an environment that's tough to play in, but we're hoping that a lot of our Vikings fans travel, just like there were some Green Bay fans at home this past week."

The shorter week won't matter to either side considering they faced off last weekend. At least it gives the Packers less time to watch video of the horror show their defense put on trying to slow down Peterson.

They'll do a better job this Saturday night.

BEST BET: PACKERS, 31-20

Indianapolis (plus 6? ) at Baltimore

This could be Ray Lewis' final game; he announced Wednesday his plan to end his 17-year career that certainly should land him in the Hall of Fame.

There are much better ways to finish than chasing around the Colts' offense, which will be a difficult chore for the Ravens' defense. With Lewis sidelined for nearly three months with a triceps injury and Terrell Suggs not resembling the Defensive Player of the Year he was in 2011 as he plays while still recovering from an Achilles tendon injury, Baltimore can't count on shutting down opponents.

In previous seasons when the Ravens were a defensive power, Andrew Luck might be reduced to an overmatched rookie. Not now.

UPSET SPECIAL: COLTS, 23-17

Cincinnati (plus 5) at Houston

The Texans stumbled into the playoffs, losing three of four and blowing home-field advantage and a bye in the AFC. Cincinnati, on the other hand, won seven of its last eight with a staunch defense.

Houston made the postseason for the first time last year and promptly knocked off the Bengals in the wild-card round. Both teams are improved this season, and the key could be which side protects its quarterback better. Houston has J.J. Watt and Antonio Smith providing pressure on the quarterbacks. For Cincinnati, it's Geno Atkins and Michael Johnson.

Houston will do it better.

TEXANS, 24-20

Seattle (minus 1?) at Washington

The juiciest of the weekend's matchups features two streaking teams: Washington won its final seven games to take the NFC East, Seattle took its last five and seven of eight.

Rookie quarterbacks Robert Griffin III for the Redskins and Russell Wilson for the Seahawks have been sensational, like Indy's Luck. RG3 showed enough mobility in the win over Dallas to clinch the division, and his knee should be even stronger on Sunday to provide the double-threat potential that highlights his game.

Wilson is healthy and has similar skills. Even more encouraging for him is the Seahawks have an intimidating, resourceful defense with the speed to slow down Washington's offense. Seattle also has learned how to win on the road.

SEAHAWKS, 23-16

New Strategy of Construction and Its implications on Real Estate Ehics

Home construction is the process of constructing a home. Starting with basic pre-historic shelters, home construction has progressed to produce the wide variety of living resorts available today. Different levels of prosperity and power have guaranteed various sizes, splendid luxuries, and even resistance in a ?home?. Ecological concerns and social impacts have created an hugely different selection of structural styles. From estates to mud thatches, estates to shanties, the ?home? has expanded to signify a apparently unlimited range of components.

Almost every group across the nation has new construction projects currently being designed and above to be designed. Understanding their effect on the value of your residence or future residence can be extremely valuable. New development tasks can have a small or in some cases a remarkable effect on what route residence principles will head. The question for you is why and how to do we found out precise information to assess its true effect.

If you realized that in the next several decades those houses in your place are going to decrease a huge number, would these details before side help you? What if you where considering promoting your home? You might act as soon as possible instead of patiently waiting, wouldn?t you? What if you really want to buy a apartment in a city that you had proof would decrease quickly the next several years? Would that have any impact on your choice on whether to buy now or wait?

The reason new construction has an effect on principles is simple. New construction contributes additional stock to the industry. At any time more houses are added to a industry then values will be impacted because customers now have a larger share of houses to choice from. For example if there are 100 single houses in the marketplace and a new growth smashes ground and contributes a 25 lot community the stock levels have improved by 25% to 125 qualities.

Real Estate Property is impacted by the financial concept of supply and demand. When provide improves and requirements stay the same principles have to decrease. While if provide reduces and need is constant or improves then principles have no choice but to devalue. Therefore any new development tasks have to have at least a small effect on value. Think about if there are 50 apartments in the marketplace in an area and a new apartment complicated is about to be designed that includes 50 new models. The number of apartments in that industry would dual to 100 models. Unless need also bending which are not likely, value of current apartments will decrease in the long run. Therefore if you are thinking about promoting, make sure you before the Complex strike the industry.

Figuring out what new construction projects are in performs is simple, go to your regional preparing panel and ask them what projects are about to be began. And then there are out what other projects have been posted for acceptance and will be arriving down the range in the next 6 several weeks or future decades. This information is precious.

Pakistan child measles deaths surge in 2012

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) ? Measles cases surged in Pakistan in 2012 with hundreds of children dying of the disease, an international health body said Tuesday.

Pakistani officials in recent days say they have launched an immunization campaign to reach children in the worst-hit areas. But the country still struggles with a beleaguered health care system, unsanitary conditions in many regions and a lack of education about how to prevent disease. All those factors make it difficult to combat infectious diseases such as measles and polio.

A spokeswoman for the World Health Organization, Maryam Yunus, said that 306 children died in Pakistan of measles in 2012, compared to 64 the year before.

She said the jump was most pronounced in southern Sindh province, where measles killed 210 children in 2012. She said only 28 children died there in 2011.

The World Health Organization did not give a reason for the increase in deaths, but a provincial health official in Sindh said that the disease hit areas where poor families did not vaccinate their children.

Provincial health minister Saghir Ahmed said 100 children died in Sindh province in December alone, mostly in areas where many people were not vaccinated.

He said health officials recently launched a campaign to vaccinate 2.9 million children in the affected areas of the province and urged parents to get their children vaccinated.

Many Pakistanis, especially in rural areas, view vaccinations campaigns with suspicion as a western plot to sterilize Muslims. In December, nine health officials working to immunize Pakistanis against polio were killed by militants opposed to the campaign. Pakistan is one of three countries in the world where polio is endemic.

Sindh province, the hardest hit area by the measles outbreak, has also been battered by repeated floods in recent years that have damaged hospitals and clinics.

Measles is an extremely infectious disease spread by coughing and sneezing, or personal contact. It causes a fever, cough and a rash all over the body. Most people who contract the disease recover but it can be deadly for malnourished children who have not been vaccinated.

Complications from the disease can include blindness, an infection that causes brain swelling, dehydration and diarrhea, and pneumonia. According to WHO, 139,300 people died of measles worldwide in 2010.

Careers: Has the post-university job dearth and debt crisis hit even ...

File:US Navy 040129-N-8937A-023 Army Capt. Sandi Parriott conducts a routine spaying procedure on a DOD family housecat.jpg

veterinarian neutering a pet cat/US Navy

So says?law professor William D. Henderson, pointing to Dr. Andrew Clark, who runs a consulting business for veterinary doctors.

Dr. Clark, who has a DVM and an MBA, notes,

From my position in the industry, in the economy in which we all work, the demand for veterinary services appears smaller than the supply of veterinarians. I routinely look at the financial statements of over 50 veterinary practices; equine, mixed and companion animal. Those financial statements demonstrate that practices do not generate enough profit to pay Veterinarians sufficiently to repay student loans under the repayment terms commonly available. That is a remarkably bad situation since the successful transfer of the Veterinary Profession from one generation to another is dependent upon the next generation being solvent and content.

One reason he fingers is too great a supply of new veterinarians, and the reasons are a cautionary tale:

When the dust all settles, Veterinary Colleges are in the business of selling Veterinary Medical Degrees to students who buy a degree with the intention of using it to make a living. In the age of austerity, Veterinary colleges have faced massive budget cuts. One response has been to increase class size, generating tuition revenue for the school. In effect, the colleges are generating more customers for their product and increasing the supply of veterinarians. From my perspective and experience, the veterinary profession is upside down as far as supply and demand goes. We have inadequate demand for Veterinary services to support the number of veterinarians in practice. Increasing class size diminishes the earning potential and therefore the value of a Veterinary Medical degree yet the cost of the degree continues to escalate. That strategy only works for schools because student loans are easy to acquire and young consumers following their life?s dream are still willing to borrow the money to purchase the degree at an ever higher price with challenging terms. The cost of the Veterinary degree goes up while the value of a veterinary degree goes down and students continue to purchase degrees on borrowed money.

Ominously,

Bankruptcy on student loans used to be a big loss for lenders. However, under the new regulations, student loans cannot be discharged by bankruptcy so there is significantly less risk now.

In short, there is little incentive from within the system to warn the student that the dream might be a mirage?where nothing turns out to be real except the debt.

Henderson adds,

Suffice to say, what is happening in the veterinary education, and the broader vet industry, is eerily close to the problems in legal education and the legal profession.

More on that later.

An underlying problem may be that companion animals are a discretionary expense. We want them, but we don?t ?need? them to live. A prolonged decline in fulltime employment in a rust belt may mean that people either do not acquire as many of them or do not spend on them what they otherwise would.

None of this need discourage the determined student in principle. The student must realize two things: Veterinary practice is a business as well as a profession, and the proceeds from the practice must sustain both the vet?s living expenses and any debt incurred. Therefore, some careful research is needed about whether, when, and where these conditions can be met. Second, not all sources of advice in this area are of equal value, for the reasons that Dr. Clark has indicated. There is no substitute for personal, on-the-ground research when taking such a big step as going into student loan debt for a career you love.

Tim & Jules: There's No Place Like Home for the Holidays!

We had an absolutely wonderful time home with family in the States for Thanksgiving and Christmas! I feel truly blessed to have had the opportunity to see so many I love and have so much time home.

Our trip ended up looking like this:
1 Week in Chicago (Tim presenting a paper and preaching at The Orchard, and catching up with our dear friends) Here are some of those pics. There are so many pictures I wish I would have taken, but forgot! I didn't get one pic of my LIFE group gals from church or with our time with Suzanne and her sweet family including their new lil' bundle!

But I sure did enjoy the time with everyone :)

1 Week in Philadelphia and State College for Thanksgiving with our families

1 Week in Vancouver, WA with Ryan and Kelly Beardsley while Tim preached at their church. We got to see the West Coast and the Pacific for the first time! Our parents and Tim's sister shared the load of watching the girls, so Tim and I were able to be ALONE together. It was a wonderfully refreshing time!?Here are all of the pics of our time there.
3 Weeks in Pennsylvania (split between Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, State College, Bellefonte, and Altoona) This was the most relaxing time because we were able to just BE in one place for a while and rest with family. Are Philanthropists Doing It Wrong? | Tony Macklin

Last week, financial writer Felix Salmon published a blog post entitled ?Philanthropy: You?re doing it wrong.??His post particularly takes to task the practices and behaviors he sees in wealthier donors.

Though Salmon doesn?t use the term, much of his column pushes back against donor ?hyperagency.? ?In?The Modern Medici, ?Boston College professor?Paul Schervish?described hyperagency as ?the enhanced capacity of wealthy individuals to establish or?control substantially the conditions under which they and others will live.? Schervish wrote that very wealthy people have the inclination and ability ?to be producers rather than simply supporters of philanthropic projects.?

I agree with some of Salmon?s thoughts, especially those that encourage philanthropists to give with a light footprint. Donors should always be mindful of the limited resources most nonprofits have, especially for daily operations and operating reserves. Paul Shoemaker, Executive Connector and Director of Social Venture Partners Seattle, provided similar advice in his ?10 Things We?d Like to Tell Every New Philanthropist? posts for PhilanthroMedia in late 2008. (I?ve collected those into one PDF here:?10 Things to Tell Every New Philanthropist).

But, some of Salmon?s advice misses out on the many motivations that drive giving (Schervish?s paper called them determinants of charitable giving). Salmon seems to favor altruistic giving that efficiently maximizes social impact, but doesn?t favor common motivations such as legacy, opportunities for family philanthropy, emotional and social affiliation, or gratitude.

He also sees setting up a new foundation as a likely waste of financial and human resources. This sometimes can be true. However, he doesn?t mention the many inexpensive ways donors can establish and run foundations, and doesn?t mention that sometimes a foundation or donor-advised fund can be the best option for a large one-time financial event such as the sale of a business or a large inheritance.

Like many pundits in the philanthropy press and blogosphere, Salmon believes philanthropists are doing it wrong. Unfortunately, like those pundits, he defines ?wrong? as ?doesn?t match my personal values, interests, and worldview.?
